Sir, - What a delight to read at last an authoritative letter on the subject of invidious wind turbines.
David Clarke (D&S letters, May 16) has highlighted the facts and figures which so clearly demonstrate that the whole campaign is a complete fiasco.
There is one outstanding question which I have repeatedly asked, without any reply from the turbine lobby. How many turbines, covering what area of (say) North Yorkshire would justify the closure of just one fossil-fuel-burning power station?

Wind Turbines Snippets & Quotes |
|
Professor Peter Stiles of Keel University has completed tests in relation to a wind farm at Dunbar in Scotland and has found that infrasound vibrations are detected 10 kilmetres (6.2 miles) from the site of 60 metre turbines as soon as they start to generate. If the turbine has 3 blades (as is usual) and it turns at 20 revs per minute, then there will be a THUMP every second. Imagine 6 turbines all thumping away at once!
"One survey found that all but 1 of 14 people living near the Bears Down wind farm at Padstow, Cornwall, where 16 turbines were put up two years ago, had experienced increased numbers of headaches and 10 said they had problems sleeping and suffered from anxiety". Dr Amanda Harry, a local GP who did the research, continued to say, "People demonstrated a range of symptoms from headaches, migraines, nausea, dizziness, palpitations and tinnitus to sleep disturbance, stress, anxiety and depression. These symptoms had a knock on effect on their daily lives causing poor concentration, irritability and an inability to cope".
"If I wanted to build in an area of outstanding natural beauty I wouldn't be allowed. Yet these turbines are 22 storeys high and put on hills where everyone can see them. They need 1,000 tonnes of concrete and a road infrastructure. It beggars belief that some environmental groups say they are 'green'!". David Bellamy

Fast flickering wind turbines could provoke siezures |
|
University of Essex website 29 April 2008
Arnold Wilkins, BSc, DPhil, CPsychol, FBPsS Professor
Wind turbines should not rotate more than sixty times a minute to avoid provoking seizures, researchers from the Universities of Essex and Aston have found.
They were looking to identify what type of flicker from wind turbines could bring on seizures and as a result have come up with guidelines to minimise impact. Planning permission for wind farms often consider flicker, but current guidelines relate to annoyance and are based on physical or engineering considerations rather than the danger to people who may be photosensitive.
Arnold Wilkins from the University of Essex and Graham and Pamela Harding from the University of Aston calculated different shadow flicker effects on wind turbines to measure the seizure provoking possibilities.
Large wind turbines usually rotate at between 30 and 60 revolutions per minute, many are three-bladed and operate at constant speed, while some are two-bladed.
